A little while ago I had the opportunity of attending the Managed Security Solutions Group annual customer conference. We intend to get our consumers together every year, not just to offer them a comprehensive view of our product roadmap, but also to provide the chance to give us feedback on our services as well as network with their friends. Not surprisingly, it's a fantastic couple of days.
This year, I noticed there was one topic at the front of everyone's mind regarding managed security solutions today how to deal with allowing staff to bring their own gadgets to work. My perception, which seems to be in line with those I talked with, is we need to enable employees to use their own devices - it would make them a lot more productive and agile workers who are faster to respond to customer needs. Instead of having lesser worries on their horizons with
managed security solutions now, 2011 seems to be brimming with new problems for CISOs. Besides the challenge of managing non-homogenous devices, I believe we'll be noticing more cyber-weapons like Stuxnet along with other targeted botnets. While it is true that worms like Stuxnet are made to do harm to a particular type of systems, we need to be careful since we don't know what system might be next. This time it was SCADA systems, however next time it could be financial trading systems, or perhaps transportation system. Whatever it is, we can be certain that there will be a "next time" and that the speed at which exploits may be deployed is getting much faster.
But naturally, as CISOs and their squads are patching and defending, they also have to be showing the performance and value of their security and risk management programs to the panel. In putting together my organization's risk register and security scorecard, I consider a complete spectrum of risk from the geo-political to the completely technical. Human action and human intelligence are key elements in both creating and avoiding risk with managed security solutions today. If we're just looking at risk management as something which an off-the-shelf box or piece of software may solve, then we're missing the mark.
